New Housing in Santa Cruz county - Approved and Proposed Developments

New Housing in Santa Cruz County - Current & Future plans for development from Breakfast with the Mayors Meeting

I recently went to a Breakfast with the Mayors meeting which had the mayors of the City of Santa Cruz, Capitola, Scotts Valley and our  1st District County Supervisor John Leopold in attendance.  This was held at the Santa Cruz Association of Realtors and we discussed topics like affordable housing, plans for new developments, and vacation rentals.

Here is a summary of what we discussed in terms of new and proposed housing developments in Santa Cruz county.

The mayor of Scotts Valley is Randy Johnson .  Randy spoke about all of the new housing that will be going in the City of Scotts Valley.  Scotts Valley actually has a lot of room to grow, unlike most of Santa Cruz.  There will be a 129 unit hotel on Scotts Valley Drive opening in about 2 months,  a Marriot hotel in the works at the old Borland site that will have about 125 units.  1440 MultiVersity has opened - it is a learning center that will have workshops and events that focus on personal development, health and nutrition.

There are 40 luxury homes that are approved to be built in Scotts Valley in the $1.5 to $2 million dollar range.

A town center is in the works for Scotts Valley, which they really need.  They are currently looking for a developer.  The plan is to add 250 to 300 new housing units as well as retail in the proposed town center.

The mayor of the City of Santa Cruz Cynthia Chase spoke about a recently approved 79 unit complex for Downtown Santa Cruz in the last undeveloped site after the 1989 earthquake - this is 27 years in the  making and finally has approval and plans to start building! It will be mostly studio and 1 bedroom units.

The mayor of Capitola, Stephanie Harlan spoke about the high density of Capitola and that they really do not have room to add a lot of new units.  Exciting news is that the Rispin Mansion area is supposedly going to to be made into a public park and that this has been approved.  I grew up in Capitola and have heard SO many different plans for this area, it will be amazing to see it one day actually take place.

Plans for the Rispin Mansion in Capitola:

A permanent Capitola Library is also approved to be built, the plans look beautiful:

John Leopold is the 1st District Supervisor for Santa Cruz county, John spoke about development in the county.  Near Capitola Road and 17th Avenue they are looking to build on a 4 acre site a mixed use development that would become like a town center for Live Oak, which would be great.  Along Portola Drive there have been proposals for a hotel and more mixed use residential and retail units that they are getting resident feedback on and trying to find a way to get approval to develop.

There is a lot going on in Santa Cruz county in terms of new housing developments and proposed developments.  Our county will continue to grow whether we like it or not.  Finding ways to do this in the most responsible way that keeps the character of Santa Cruz is what we need to focus on and give our input and suggestions to our elected officials.
